“Oh, numnah!”

As you may know, Sameer Mishra, 13, won the Scripps National Spelling Bee last night. This clip of Sameer being asked to spell “numnah” is really funny:

He won the bee after correctly spelling “guerdon.” The second place winner, Sidharth Chand, 12, lost when he missed the “i” in “prosopopoeia.” At least “prosopopoeia” is an impressive word to lose over. I remember losing my eighth grade spelling bee after spelling “octopus” with a “u” instead of an “o.” I had out-spelled everyone in the eighth grade except for one other kid, and then came what should have been my easiest word: octopus. I still went home with a trophy, but I then had to face the embarrassment of admitting what my losing word was to anyone who asked. Needless to say, I didn’t go on to nationals. However, I did get my picture in the local paper. Of course, they misspelled my name.
